Ryan O’Neal’s Son Pleads Guilty to DUI After Car Accident

Griffin O’Neal, son of actor Ryan O’Neal, has plead guilty in a San Diego court to DUI charges stemming from a car accident that occurred in August.

According to police reports, O’Neal was driving his car in the San Pasqual area on August 2nd when he suddenly veered into oncoming traffic, colliding head-on with another vehicle. The driver of that car sustained serious head and back injuries.

A toxicology report determined that O’Neal was under the influence of amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana and Xanax at the time of the car accident. Police also found a loaded firearm and crack cocaine in his vehicle. O’Neal was on probation for a previous DUI when the collision occurred.

In open court, O’Neal, 47, admitted his role in causing the car accident and plead guilty to two separate charges: felony DUI and possession of a firearm by a felon. He also acknowledged that there was a previous strike on his record stemming from a 1992 incident in which he fired a gun into an unoccupied vehicle in Los Angeles. By agreeing to the plea deal, the other charges against him were subsequently dismissed.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 12th. At that time, O’Neal will learn whether he will receive the maximum sentence of up to four years in prison. There is a slight possibility he may only receive probation. Coincidentally, the accident occurred the same day as Griffin’s half-brother Redmond O’Neal was arrested for heroin possession in Santa Monica following a traffic stop.

While there is no official word on whether the driver who was injured will seek damages against Mr. O’Neal, it may be highly likely that they will do so. Depending on the extent of their injuries, the injured motorist may face staggering medicals and time away from work. In the state of California, a negligent driver may be required to pay compensation for causing injury to someone else through their careless behavior.
