Drunk driving major problem for San Diego motorists.
San Diego drivers incur the highest number of DUI citations annually, according to a new report from Insurance.com.
The city tops the list for the second year in a row, with Los Angeles coming in a close second and San Francisco and San Jose ranking fifth and seventh respectively. The study was based on a combination of Census Bureau data and information entered through Insurance.com’s online insurance quote form.
According to the San Diego Police Department, DUIs are tracked in part by monitoring the number of hit-and-run car accidents occurring between midnight and 3:00 a.m. Officers say the frequency of accidents caused by impaired drivers is typically at its peak during those hours and can be attributed at least in part to the higher number of tourists, traveling business people, military members and younger drivers who frequent San Diego roadways.
The San Diego PD attempts to curb the number of car accidents caused by drunk drivers by setting up DUI checkpoints across the city. The checkpoints are funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety and the University of California Berkeley.
Statistically, drunk drivers are much more likely to be involved in a serious or fatal car accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately one-third of all fatal accidents that occurred in 2009 involved a driver whose blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit. The Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that there were approximately 1.4 million DUI arrests in 2010.
With four major California cities listed in the top ten, it’s evident that drunk driving poses a serious threat to other drivers in the state. As the number of DUIs reportedly annually continues to climb, the number of car accidents caused by drunk drivers is also expected to increase.
