Separate car accidents claim three lives in Shafter.
The roads proved to be deadly for three Shafter residents who were killed in separate car accidents over the weekend.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the first accident occurred Friday night when a 59-year-old man veered off the road and into a tree. The crash occurred around 9:30 p.m. along East Lerdo Highway near Cherry Avenue. The victim, Guadalupe Hernandez, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second crash occurred early Sunday morning, as a woman attempted to make a u-turn across State Route 43 near Burbank Street. The victim in that accident, 48-year-old Donna Lynn Barnes, was struck head-on by a tractor trailer. While the driver in that accident was unhurt, Ms. Barnes died at the scene.
The third fatal accident occurred late Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Merced and Palm Avenues. According to police reports, the driver in that accident ran a stop sign and crashed into the victim’s car, which had the right of way. Two people involved in the accident were airlifted to a nearby hospital to receive treatment for their injuries while one of the car’s passengers, Ruben Solis Rojas, 64, was killed instantly. The California Highway Patrol is urging drivers who frequent this stretch of highway to use caution, especially when approaching intersections.
A makeshift memorial at the intersection serves as a reminder to drivers that a car accident can occur anytime and anywhere. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were over 10 million car accidents in the U.S. in 2009, which resulted in nearly 34,000 deaths and over 3 million injuries. Over 3,000 people were killed as a result of traffic-related accidents in California alone. A car accident can cause significant long-term emotional and physical damage and it can also leave you financially devastated as a result of mounting medical bills, burial costs and lost wages.
